Community
Spanning 1.5 hectares, Mondial Education serves the educational needs of the community in Semarang by using the immersion approach to develop bilingual education. Located in a peaceful residential area, Mondial Education provides an ideal environment in a safe and non-polluted part of the city. Currently, Mondial Education offers classes from Pre-primary up to Junior High School. The school has provided Pre-primary and Primary programs since 2002 and later developed its expansion into Junior High School in 2015. Our academic year began in July 2015. Parents of various cultural and religious backgrounds entrusted their children’s educational needs to us. Despite of the diversity of students in Mondial Junior High School, a harmonious environment is well preserved.
Curriculum
As the academic program is organized based on the national curriculum, the subjects offered in Mondial Junior High School (MJHS) include Mathematics, English, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Religion, Physical Education (PE), Civics, Bahasa Indonesia, Social Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Graphic Design and Performing Art. Our motto is “Non Scholae Sed Vitae Discimus” (not for school but for life we learn), MJHS’s education system does not only give attention to the academic achievements of the students but also highlights the students’ ability to display good moral values in their daily lives. Consequently, character education has an impact in our daily educational practices. Good moral principles are not only taught explicitly but, more importantly, they are practiced in every single facet of curriculum implementation.
English as well as Indonesian are used as the media of instructions. Subjects that are ‘Indonesian specific’ such as the Indonesian language, civic education and religion are taught in Indonesian. Subjects that have the potentials to be pursued when students attend higher education, such as science and mathematics, at universities in Indonesia or overseas are taught both in English and in Indonesian. In this way, our graduates are expected to be able to take part in the national exams as well as pursue their tertiary/university education without difficulties. This is especially true since the Indonesian ministry of tertiary education has decided that starting in 2016 all universities in Indonesia are supposed to implement the bilingual educational system. To achieve the purpose, reference books that are nationally and internationally published are used in Mondial Junior High School.
In addition to the intra-curricular activities, students are also given options to join some useful extra-curricular activities such as Modern Dance, Basketball, and Debate. These activities are introduced to make students develop additional practical skills suitable with their personal interests. Participations in these activities are believed to eventually boost students’ self-confidence especially when students participate in various competitions, since the competitions represent the challenges the students face in their real lives. Exposing them to the challenges is a way to increase the level of competitiveness.
Our typical day starts at 07.45 a.m. when students get together in the assembly. The assembly is structured in such a way so that the students are aware of what the focus of the day is. Everyday, a teacher or two presents a particular moral or practical issue for everyone to reflect including culture, education, character building, nationalism, etc. The students are given sometime to read their books for silent reading. Morning prayer and reciting the Mondial Pledge mark the end of the assembly. On Fridays the day starts with the morning walk to explore the neighborhood and the community.
